First 5 Service Corps
|
AmeriCorps Service Corps Members are part of a federally funded service program organized by the Corporation for National and Community Service in which individuals help communities meet specific needs through a variety of service opportunities. The First 5 Service Corps Initiative is a statewide initiative to enhance and expand programs serving young children through the placement of AmeriCorps members in community agencies. AmeriCorps members provide services in school readiness activities focused on literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development. Service Corps Members enhance their experience by recruiting community volunteers to participate in activities with them throughout the year. The purpose of this initiative is to engage community residents in providing services to children up to 5 years old and their families to enable them to enter school ready to succeed.
The First 5 Service Corps provides a unique opportunity for agencies with limited resources to leverage both financial and human resources for their programs. This initiative provides benefits to the community, host agencies, and corps members. The community's young children and their families will be able to take advantage of expanded and quality enhanced programs; host sites will benefit from increased organizational capacity and skills; and corps members will develop and build valuable professional competencies.
